How long does it roughly take to crate train a puppy?

Question from Mary B
Hello I have a King Charles puppy who is 12 weeks old. We got her at 10 weeks, I am trying to crate train her instead of using the newspaper method. I am not having much luck, I am constantly taking her outside but she still has lots of accidents indoors. Maybe I am expecting miracles but wondering should I be doing something else. Thanks.

It depends on the dog, the owner and how rigidly you’re sticking to the schedule and training. I had incredible luck with training my first pup, and though I hardly got a wink of sleep those first two weeks, by the end of it, she basically knew the rules.
Stick with it.

When the dog is not in a crate, keep the puppy on a leash, with you, in the house. Do not let the puppy loose in the house, otherwise it will continue to have accidents. Do NOT leave the puppy unsupervised in the house, not ever!

It really doesn’t take long to crate train a puppy if you do it right. I don’t see how she is having lots of accidents if you are constantly taking her outside.
If your puppy has had an accident in the crate, scrub it down with a pet odor eliminator. Make sure the crate isn’t too big for the pup, it usually won’t have an accident in it’s sleeping area unless it is left too long without going out.
Keep your puppy in the crate most of the time, don’t ever let it just wander around the house. You have to keep your eyes on that puppy every second it is out of the crate. One way to tell if the puppy needs to use the bathroom, watch her, when she starts seriously sniffing the ground and circling she’s ready to potty. If she squats make a lound noise, like you do if a baby reaches for something dangerous, then pick the puppy us and take her outside to do it. When she goes outside, have a treat ready and tell her she is a good girl.
Take the puppy out at least every 2 hours, and make sure you take her out about 30 minutes after you feed her. Btw, don’t leave food down for her to eat whenever she wants, give her meals at set times depending on how often she needs to eat, and take it up after about 20 minutes. Play with her for a few minutes and then take her out for a walk. Again give her a treat and praise when she pottys outside.
You need to pay attention to what times she pottys and remember it, because you are really training yourself to know your puppy’s potty schedule.
Remember never hit or yell at your puppy, you don’t want her to be scared of you. Positive reinforcement is a lot better way to train a puppy!
Good luck in your training!
