How can I train my puppy to tell me when he has to go outside?

how to train a puppy
I have a 6 month old miniature dachshund. I was easily able to paper train him but I’m having some trouble with housebreaking. When he is outside playing or on walks he knows to go potty outside, but when we are inside he doesn’t know how to alert us to let us know he has to go outside and often goes potty near the door before we can let him out. I have heard of people ringing a bell on the door handle so the dog will learn to ring the bell to go outside but I don’t know if this actually works. I have another dog who will come and get us or scratch the door when he has to go outside but I can’t seem to find any signals from the puppy. Does anybody have any ideas?

You may train your dog to ring a bell when he needs to go out. Hang a bell at the door where he exits. Make it low enough so he is able to reach it. At first when you know it’s time to go out take him to the door at this point you will have the bell in your hand in front of the door, have a treat in one hand and the bell in the other let him sniff it. As soon as he makes it ring praise him with the treat and let him out. After a while he will get the idea. The more you do this the faster he’ll get the idea of what you’re asking of him. Hope this helps;^)

My puppy has been housebroken for a while. He doesn’t tell me when he has to go out, but I’ve learned to watch him. When they start sniffing around a lot, that’s usually time to take them out. He’s an austrailian cattle dog, and they are notoriously smart. But if I see him sniffing, I’ll ask “Do you need to go out?” Usually if he does, he’ll perk up and act excited. If he just ignores me, he doesn’t need to and he’s just being nosy smelling things.

We used the puppy pads for a while when he was in his room at night and while I was at work. Now we don’t even bother with them. He won’t go in his room anymore. I guess he’s learned to hold it.

    I hope this helps!!!

Use plenty of positive reinforcement to teach your puppy the right place to potty. Take him out every couple of hours and when he goes repeat whatever word you want to use for going potty so he relates that to what he’s doing. Then praise him for accomplishing what you want him to do. If you’re inside, look for signs that he’s ready to go - like sniffing for a spot and immediately take him out. Take him out first thing in the morning and after every meal, too. If he goes in the house, don’t let him see you clean it up, but do a thorough job so he doesn’t smell it afterwards and isn’t drawn to the same spot again. If you have your puppy crate trained, potty training is much easier. Just take him out right away each time he comes out of the crate, but don’t leave him in for too long at a time. Lots of positive reinforcement, praise and patience will do the trick!

well when your dog needs to go take him at least every 3-5 hours or take him out side after he eats. soon he’ll learn you could get a doogy door installed when he gets the hang of it. and for his first few times going out walk around with him in your backyard or around the blockand when he goes give it a treat and praise him/her.
