how to train a puppy
My new puppy is teething and he is biting everything and everyone literally! So I was hoping to get some advice on some successful ways to train him to do otherwise.

Here’s a great article on how to teach bite inhibition:

That’s for the people. As for the THINGS he’s chewing, make sure to have lots of toys and puppy chews available for him. If you catch him chewing something else, quickly take it away and give him one of his bones/chew toys. Give him lots of praise when he chews on HIS things. ;) Nylabones for puppies would be perfect for him.

When he starts to bite give him a toy that is suitable instead. If he continues to ignore the toy and bite you, get up, walk away from him and ignore him until he calms down.

The puppy is probably getting thier teeth soo you should get a really good chew toy the puppy is crazy about and let him chew that. And get some BBQ bones the stain but puppies LOVE them. Any tome he goes to bite some one pick him up and put him next his bone play with it with him and get him to fetch it. I really hope this works for you cause it did wonders with my puppy.

    1) Correct: Tell your puppy no bite!
    2) Re-direct: Give your puppy a suitable chew toy.
    3) Praise: As soon as your puppy starts chewing on the appropriate toy, give puppy lots of praise.
    4) Repeat every time puppy bites or chews on something inappropriate.

I guarantee that this will work.

my puppy does the same, but doesn’t bite people, he is actually afraid of people, when one gets close 2 him he runs away, but anyway my answer is:

buy him plenty of chew toys, alot of them, and don’t let him bite shoes or socks or furniture once he gets the habit of it he wont stop, and he/she will think its OK 2 bite anything!!!!!!! Give him/she lots of bones that they can chew on, but get long ones u should b able 2 find them at the store. Get lots of things that he/she can chew, so the pup can get the habit of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sorry 4 writing so much,

    *******GOOD LUCK*******

can we b friends, no offense?????

    Teach the Leave It command.

Every time he/she bites what is shouldn’t, say very loudly LEAVE IT and immediately distract the dog. When that doesn’t work, then say the leave it loudly and (as long as he/she can’t see you do it) quickly pull the puppy backwards away from what ever its biting by grabbing (lightly) its tail and pulling it backwards. Just do NOT let the dog see you do it.

ALSO, get bones like BEEF rib bones, cut off as much of the meat as you can then FREEZE them and let the puppy have one at a time when he/she is doing the biting. Don’t just leave it out, but when the puppy leaves it for something else, pick it up and put it back in the freezer.

Bones are much easier to use than something like Ora Gel that is used for human babies (and dogs).

He/she starts biting because their gums hurt. They are cutting teeth and once they start biting if not stopped will continue doing so from both habit and because it gets a reaction from the person it is biting. Reaction means ATTENTION.

I have to disagree about the nylabones. They are highly dangerous for any dog. Dogs tend to chew too big of bites off the bones and swallow larger chunks than what can be easily dissolved in their stomachs; then it passes through the intestine and often lodges in the intestinal tract causing pain and discomfort. Sometimes they eventually pass the pieces, but in some cases they have to be surgically removed. Many dogs have died from those bones. Only let your puppy chew on things that won’t come apart so it won’t swallow pieces of it. Find solid rubber toys and those rope toys with solid knots in them. Avoid rough play with your puppy because they can’t distinguish between play and pain. Don’t let others play rough with your puppy either. Encourage safe mouth play by putting your fingers in his/her mouth and reward him when he doesn’t bite down. Use an old tooth brush to train him to let you brush his teeth. If he’s used to you putting your fingers in his mouth, he will adapt to other skills much easier.

well if he’s teething let him teeth their is nothing you can do when he is done teething but is still biting you first got to make a high pitch sound when he bites then show him no attention when he calms down play with him again he bites you repeat what you did before
