I have heard of putting a bell on the door, and teaching them how to ring that. Like hang it from a string our toy, from the door handle. Then from there, you just know when they go to the door, they need to go out!

I use the bell method. I attached a string of sleigh bells to the door handle and every time we would go outside to potty I would hit the bells and say “Let’s go potty”. My dog caught on pretty fast and paws the bells when he needs to go out. Also by using the bells your able to easily hear your dog from another room.
