What is the best way to Crate Train a puppy?

jane s wants to know:
I just take a dog that is 3 MOS. I start school soon so I won 't be in the country all day. Can I go back every few hours to check it out and leave. I wish she could sleep in there at night without whining. Where should I put the drawer? What is the easiest way to train?

A puppy should not be in a crate longer than 2 hours at a time during the day. Then at night it can be in there all night. If you’re going to be at school you may want to confine the puppy so where with wee wee pads so it has place to run around as well. Puppies eat,sleep and go potty. When you do crate your puppy there should not be food or water in there. Before your take the puppy out give it a drink of water, to make the juices flow. At night give her something to cuddle with and you could put a chew toy in there as well. Puppies take work at first, but all worth it!! Take care;~}

All I can tell you is what I’m going through right now … I have the crate right next to my bed. I take him out first thing in the morning, right after we play, 45 minutes after food or drink, and right before bedtime. Depending on puppy’s size, that timing may vary (you will eventually learn her bladder schedule). It’s important to keep the crate in a visible location so that your puppy doesn’t feel isolated.
She’ll whine the first few nights … she’s a baby and in an unfamiliar location. Once she feels safe and comfortable (stick in a blanket and a favorite toy), she should sleep through the night without many problems.
Don’t use the crate to punish her. If she gets thrown in the crate every time you yell at her and punish her, she’ll associate it with something bad and won’t want to go in. The crate should feel like home to her, as it simulates a den (allegedly).

Be firm, be consistent.
It should be comfortable and in a quiet area.
I cover mine with a sheet at sleep time.
Start by placing dog into crate, talk in soothing manner and reward with small treat if acting according to your wishes/expectations.
Do it the same way each and every time.
All I have to say to my dogs is “time for bed” and they go running for their crates.
Remember, never use crate for punishment. It is their home and place of security.
At night with a pup, warm a towel in the dryer and place into crate for them to lay on. An old alarm clock (must tick) wrapped in a towel, gives them the sense of their litter mates.
Remember, it’s for their safety and your sanity. A trained dog is a delight and is happy knowing its proper place.
Just like a child needs consistent discipline, avoids hyper dogs that do not know what you expect and demand.
