How long does it take to train a 6 month old puppy commands? I visited a training facility, which charge from $700.00 to $3000.00 to train a puppy/dog for 12 weeks. some include boarding. What does it take for me to train my own puppy, or do you think the training school would be worth it? Definetly not 3000.00 possibly 700.00. Thanks.

There are tons of books on the subject of training your dog. Just go to your local bookstore and buy some to help you along the way.

For their own dogs in agility classes and have championships for their dogscheck them have their trainers are not that expensive.
For their dogscheck them have their trainers are certified and are not that expensive.

I’m a firm believer in training your dog yourself. A dog may obey his handler/trainer, but not everyone else. Also sending it to a boarding facility at 6 months (right at the start of the teenage phase/spook phase) is just not a good idea in my opinion. I would never send my dog away for training, but if you absolutely have to do that, then wait until it’s between 12-17 months old.

You’ll probably be much better of enrolling in a good dog training class, where you learn how to train and interact with your dog, plus it’s much cheaper.

The training unless the dog will still be waste of control and not send it to on the training sites such as the middle of control and train the work.

If you are consistent and work with the dog several times a day every single day it should take about 6-8 weeks. While you do have to work with the dog every day, that doesn’t mean taking a huge chunk out of the day just to practice obedience. Instead, use the times when you would normally have to interact with your dog such as meal times, trips outside, and walks to practice commands that you are learning. Instead of just giving the dog his food, ask him to sit and wait to be released before eating. Ask the dog to sit before you open the door for him to go outside to potty. Ask for a sit before going through doorways or gates or before putting the leash on. And it doesn’t have to be just “sit” either…you can use any command the dog knows or whatever you are working on in class that week. I would definitely recommend going to group obedience classes…where YOU take the dog and go to a class once a week where an instructor shows you how to teach the dog a given command and then an hour later class is over and you go home and work with the dog at home. These are not expensive, generally $90-100 for a 6-8 week course, and usually well worth it. Even experienced dog owners/trainers benefit greatly from having another experienced trainer to bounce ideas off of or look to for advice if they are having a hard time with a certain issue.

I would NOT recommend a board and train type program where you take the dog and drop it off at a trainer and then pick the dog up “fully trained” several weeks later. These programs do not teach YOU how to work with your dog and most dogs that are taught at a board and train facility do well at the training facility and then regress back to bad habits once they get home. Plus, training is a fantastic bonding exercise…why would you want your dog to form a bond through training with a complete stranger rather than form a strong bond with you through training?

Go to or. Search the club listings in your area for a training club. Take your dog to classes. It will be a bonding experience and you will learn how to train your dog. Most clubs charge from $70 to $100 for 8 to 10 week classes.
