Can you train a puppy to use cat litter or do you use dog litter?
Posted by Puppy Trainer on December 10th, 2008 filed in Dogs
I receive new puppies, and it will have a small race and we little place. I want to train it in the waste box, and we have already cats. Is it possible to train a pup to use a litter tray?

not a good idea to get a dog in a really small apartment/house
also, dogs need exercise and they need to go outside.

you can but pay attention when he or she smells around to do its buisness. show it to go outside then scratch the door when it wants to come in. my dog peed and pooped 3 times before he got the hang of going outside and not being littered ike a cat because its a DOG.not cat DOG. no matter what dog it is i bet its smart enough to figure it out on its own with a little attention from you.

yes and the dog litter is newspaper. I did this with one of my dogs, I used one of those big plastic bread crates that bread is usually delivered to stores on, and lined that with newspaper. you must be consistant with praise when they do it on the crate and consistant with scolding it with a firm no when it doesn’t. Hopefully within a week or two it will start to know where to go. GOOD LUCK

I would train them to go outside where it’s natural for them. Never use cat litter, they do make dog litter but if you crate train your dog they will easily learn to go outside. A loving breeder of 10 years

It can be done. I use to have friends that did that with their dog. Honestly, it’s no different than training a dog to use a pee pad so I don’t understand why people are being so rude to you on this question.
Just know that dogs don’t cover up their business like kitties do -duh- :]
If I had a small breed, I’d probably give the litter box thing a shot rather than the pee pads. Keep a sharp eye on the new pup. I watched my puppy like a hawk, and before she got a chance to pee, I’d take her to the spot where she should be going.
Just be patient and be consistent on your training. I’m sure it’ll work out.
Good luck
Hope that helps

I have dogs that are litter trained. They do not use the same type of box as a cat would. The dogs would eat the cats litter
and it will get all over the house. I tried dog litter, it’s big comressed pieces of foam. They eat that to.
What we did was buy a condo box at the pet store. It’s a litter
box for dogs. I put newspaper in the bottom and a puppy pad. I went to home depot and bought a grate to put on top of it, the kind that are used in ceilings. I cut the crate to fit
the box perfectly. I put two layers of the grate in the condo box. Now the point of the puppy pads is to attrack the dog
to pee there. The grates which my husband thought of was
a great idea, because when the dog pees he won’t get it
on his paws. When the dog uses the box, make sure you
praise him big time, and give it a treat. That way you will
be rewarding good behaviour. My dogs have been trained
for years and it’s so much better than taking them outside
especially on bad days.
